One of the most common procedures performed at Eisemann Plastic Surgery Center in Houston, Texas, is Breast Augmentation, also known as Augmentation Mammoplasty. Some women feel that their breasts are too small for their bodies. Others want to restore breast volume that has been lost due to aging, weight loss or pregnancy. Breast Augmentation at our office may also be used to correct breast asymmetries, improve breast sagging or reconstruct a breast following surgery for breast cancer. Dr. Eisemann may also recommend a breast lift (mastopexy) at the same time as the breast augmentation surgery.
Breast Implant Procedure
Breast implants are comprised of solid silicone shells that are filled with either saline or soft silicone gel. Implants come in many sizes, shapes, profiles and textures. The newest implant available is the Cohesive Silicone Gel Implant. Some of the advantages of cohesive gel implants are their longevity and shape. Breast implants are put into place through a careful procedure. A precise pocket is created beneath the pectoralis muscle corresponding to the base width and height of the implant. This variety allows Dr. Eisemann to achieve the most desirable breast augmentation results for different types of breast anatomy and body shape. During the initial consultation, Dr. Eisemann takes measurements of the chest and will discuss the available options with the patient, including incision locations, type of implant, shape and size. He will also help the patient choose the breast implant that will most suit their body type and that will allow for the most natural and aesthetically pleasing results.
Dr. Eisemann most often performs breast augmentation in his accredited, state of the art plastic surgery suite. Here patients are placed under intravenous sedation with regional intercostal-block anesthesia. However, if a patient will be more comfortable under general anesthesia, she may choose to undergo breast augmentation surgery in a Houston-area hospital.
A typical breast augmentation surgery takes between 60-90 minutes. Patients are generally released immediately following surgery. For 2 to 3 days after the surgery, patients may experience swelling and discomfort that can be easily controlled with oral pain medication. Limited activity is allowed right after surgery and most patients resume normal exercise after a few weeks. Breast displacement exercises are begun one week following surgery to reduce the chance of scarring and hardening of the breast by spherical capsular contracture.
