Customizing Your Breast Augmentation Procedure
How do you envision your breasts? What would you like your breasts look like? How would you prefer they feel? How much cleavage would you like to have? Do you favor a natural look or something more enhanced? Questions like these will be a necessary part of your breast augmentation planning phase.
Dr. Eisemann strongly believes that our patients deserve to feel confident in their decision to have breast surgery. Working with you individually, he can customize your Houston breast augmentation procedure to produce the results you find most desirable.
To customize your breast augmentation, Dr. Eisemann will discuss options with you such as:
Options such as implant size will be based on factors including the dimensions of your chest, how much natural breast tissue is present, and your breasts in relation to you other features. It is important to remember that the size of your implants can impact other procedural options such as type of implant and implant placement.
For ideal results, you will need to be open and honest with Dr. Eisemann about your desires during the planning phase of your breast surgery. This will allow him to make procedural modifications that meet your specific needs.
Breast Augmentation Candidacy
The best way to determine if breast augmentation can help you reach your goals is through a one-on-one consultation with triple board-certified Houston plastic surgeon Dr. Michael Eisemann. During this consultation, Dr. Eisemann will first listen to your concerns and assess your expectations. With over three decades of experience, Dr. Eisemann will be able to tell you if your particular needs can be met with this procedure.
To determine your breast augmentation candidacy, Dr. Eisemann will need to look at your medical history to ensure you are physically prepared for a surgical procedure. Certain changes may need to be made to increase your candidacy for this procedure such as the discontinuation of some medications and supplements. If you are a smoker, you will need to quit at least six weeks in advance of your procedure and remain committed to not smoking through your entire recovery process.
Breast augmentation requires a recovery period. Good candidates for this procedure need to understand this and be prepared to take time off of work and to avoid certain physical activities during their breast augmentation recovery period.
Lastly, breast augmentation is a surgical procedure and, as such, comes with potential risks and complications. To be a good candidate for breast augmentation you will need to understand that complications are possible, and be willing to closely follow Dr. Eisemann’s pre and postsurgical advice to minimize your risks.
During your initial consultation, Dr. Eisemann will listen to your concerns, assess your frame, and help you determine if breast augmentation is right for you.
Breast Augmentation Recovery
Recovery from breast augmentation is a personal issue. How your body responds to surgery, your natural healing abilities, and other factors unique to your procedure will make your recovery different from anyone else’s. It is reassuring to know that Houston breast surgeon Dr. Michael Eisemann and his helpful staff are committed to helping you through your complete recovery and will remain available to you should any concerns arise.
Although your recovery from breast augmentation will be unique, most women need to rest for one to two days following surgery. During this period, swelling and mild discomfort are common. Dr. Eisemann may prescribe pain medications for postoperative discomfort. Swelling can be reduced by resting, applying icepacks, and wearing the compression garment supplied by our office.
Swelling and bruising may continue for several weeks, but most women are able to resume work and some normal activities within five to seven days. How long you need to take off of work will be discussed with you during your initial consultation and be based on the physical demands of your job.
Mild exercise such as walking should be resumed within 48 hours. Frequent walks can help reduce swelling and speed recovery. More strenuous activities and those that can impact your incisions will need to be avoided until Dr. Eisemann advises otherwise. Generally this is within four to six weeks.
Dr. Eisemann will provide you with information on how to take care of your incisions and reduce postoperative complications. It is important that you follow Dr. Eisemann’s advice to reduce your risk of issues such as infection and more severe pain.
Full recovery from breast augmentation typically takes six to eight weeks. Your final results will not be apparent until you have completely recovered. If you have concerns or questions during this time, Dr. Eisemann would be happy to talk over the phone or meet with you in person to help ensure your absolute comfort.
Your Breast Implant Options
There are a number of breast implant options that will impact the final aesthetics of your Houston breast augmentation procedure. Triple board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Michael Eisemann is pleased to offer our patients a wide range of options, allowing him to completely customize your breast augmentation and help you achieve the look of your dreams.
Your Houston breast implant options will include:
- Saline or silicone – the filling of your implant can impact incision length as well as the final look and feel of your breast augmentation procedure
- Shape – breast implants can be round or teardrop shaped
- Anatomic: Anatomic breast implants provide a more natural appearance
- Texture – some implants require texture to help prevent their shifting after placement
Each breast implant option is naturally complementary of others. For example, teardrop shaped implants placed above the muscles in the chest are often best textured to prevent a loss of symmetry. By contrast, rounded implants in the same location can shift without impacting aesthetics. What is right for you will be based on factors unique to your procedure.
Saline vs. Silicone Breast Implants
Saline breast implants can be filled after they have been placed. This process may minimize breast augmentation recovery time for some women. However, when placed above the muscles in the chest, saline implant are more prone to visible imperfections over time. Saline may also not look or feel completely natural when placed above chest muscle.
Silicone implants are only available to women over the age of 22 and may increase both surgical and recovery time. The advantage of silicone implants is that they tend to produce a more natural look and feel, regardless of placement. In addition, these implants are less likely to suffer visible imperfections, even when placed above chest muscle.
Anatomic Breast Implants
A new option, Form stable anatomic breast implants, can make your breast augmentation more rewarding and successful than ever before. Form stable anatomic breast implants are more commonly known as "gummy bear" implants. This is because their material, a cohesive silicone gel, can resemble the material of gummy bears. Cut a gummy bear in half and none of the material will leak out. The same is true for these anatomic breast implants.
The silicone gel achieves this stability and cohesion through heavily cross-linked silicone bonds. But while the science is complicated, the results are simple: these anatomic breast implants provide Houston-area women with a more natural breast appearance.
Anatomic breast implants offer a number of advantages over traditional silicone and saline implants, including:
- Decreased chance of rupture
- Lower incidence of capsular contracture
- Decreased risk of "bottoming out"
- Particularly excellent for breast reconstruction
- A natural "tear drop" shape
Now, all implant choices come with certain trade-offs. If you choose anatomic breast implants, there will be certain drawbacks. Those include:
- A slightly larger incision if placed under the infra-mammary fold
- Less upper pole fullness
These breast implants also require a more technically demanding surgical technique in order to prevent rotation. Fortunately, Dr. Eisemann has a proven track record of surgical precision and technical innovation.
We believe in doing everything we can to help you customize your breast augmentation. Your experience with us should be overwhelmingly positive. With anatomic breast implants, we offer another way for you to achieve the results you've always wanted.
Breast Implant Revision
Breast implants, particularly modern options like the gummy bear implant, can last for a number of years. It is unlikely however that they will last forever. When the time comes, board-certified Houston breast surgeon Dr. Michael Eisemann would be happy to discuss the replacement of your implants through breast augmentation revision surgery.
Revision of your initial procedure is also an option if you desire a change in appearance or in the rare case of medical necessity. These things can be discussed in detail during your initial breast augmentation consultation and as needed in the years that follow.
You may wish to consider breast augmentation revision in cases such as:
- Breast implant deflation
- Double bubble, sagging, or other aesthetic imperfections
- Capsular contracture
- Loss of symmetry
- A desire to change the size, shape, or location of breast implants
- A desire to change the type of breast implants you currently have
- A desire to remove implants entirely
The surgical techniques used for the replacement of breast implants are identical to those used in your initial breast augmentation procedure. Dr. Eisemann can use the same incision location to eliminate the risk of additional scarring, and will take great care to minimize trauma to surrounding tissue – helping to guard against additional complications as well.
Triple board-certified and with over three decades in practice, Dr. Eisemann has the education, training, and experience necessary to help ensure your breast implant replacement procedure produces the look and feel you most desire.
