Eyelid Lift Surgery in Houston (blepharoplasty)

The eyes are one of the first facial features a person notices; therefore, sagging, droopy eyelids can have an impact on the overall facial appearance. To achieve a more youthful facial appearance, an individual may choose to undergo eyelid surgery (“blepharoplasty”). This surgical procedure is frequently performed by Michael L. Eisemann, M.D., F.A.C.S., a triple board certified Houston plastic surgeon.

Dr. Eisemann offers the most up-to-date techniques in Facial Plastic Surgery at his fully accredited ambulatory surgery center.  At the Eisemann Plastic Surgery Center of Houston, patients desiring a refreshed facial appearance undergo “Blepharoplasty” also know as Eyelid Surgery.  Most patients have both upper and lower eyelid surgery, but some patients may need only one. Other procedures that they may benefit from may include a Browlift and/or Face & Necklift.  Dr. Eisemann was fellowship trained in craniofacial surgery in Toronto Canada.  He also lectures, publishes articles, and educates residents on various aspects of plastic surgery.

Eyelid Lift / Surgery or Blepharoplasty Information

For the upper eyelid lift, Dr. Eisemann will make an incision along the natural crease of the eyelid and then remove the excess fat and skin.  The incision for the lower eyelid is made just below the eyelash line, where the resulting line will be virtually undetectable.

The lower eyelid blepharoplasty is performed to eliminate puffiness and bulging fat under the eyes. When necessary, Dr. Eisemann can also reposition the fat to the upper cheek and eyelid junction to fill in deep indentations beneath the eyelid-tear trough.  This fat transfer under the eye is a great way to fill in the loss of volume that occurs with aging and eliminates bags and dark circles under the eyes.  This procedure relies primarily on the skill and technique of the Plastic Surgeon to get optimum results.  Dr. Eisemann has given lectures and trained many of the top plastic surgeons in Houston in Fat Transfer.

Upper and lower eyelid surgery may be performed separately or together, depending on the patient’s needs. Dr. Eisemann may also recommend a Browlift or Facelift (Rhytidectomy) at the same time as the Blepharoplasty.  Botox® or injectable fillers may also be used in facial rejuvenation.

Blepharoplasty at the Eisemann Plastic Surgery Center is performed under local anesthesia with IV sedation and usually takes one to two hours.  Eyelid surgery is an outpatient procedure and patients can return to the comfort of their home the same day.

Most patients can return to work after one week after their eyelid surgery, although some patients choose to wait up to two weeks.

Postoperatively Dr. Eisemann recommends the patient sit upright, sleep on their back with their head at an elevated angle of 30º, not to bend over, and not to pick up anything over 10 pounds.  The patient will also have cold compresses to use on their eyes for the first 24-48 hours.  Patients can expect most swelling to subside after one to two weeks.  Some bruising may last for up to two weeks, but this can easily be hidden with make-up once the swelling is gone.  Sutures will need to be removed by Dr. Eisemann on week after the eyelid surgery.
