What is Facelift Surgery?

Previous facelift surgery techniques tightened only the skin, making a patients face look pulled and unnatural.  At the Eisemann Plastic Surgery Center in Houston, Dr. Eisemann uses the most up-to-date facelift techniques.  This is achieved by making an incision usually beginning at the sideburn or at the temple extending in a natural line just inside the cartilage at the front of the ear, and continuing behind the earlobe into the lower hairline.  The next step in the facelift procedure is accomplished by shifting muscle and fat beneath the skin and moving them back to their original position.  When these deeper layers are lifted, the skin will naturally follow.  Liposuction of the neck may be needed to help improve the contour.  The excess skin can then be removed without tension avoiding that frozen, “windswept” look.

 While some patients can receive a more youthful appearance with just a facelift, some patients may need other facial procedures to complete their “new look” giving them a more harmonious appearance.  Other facial procedures that can be combined with the facelift are blepharoplasty, brow lift, rhinoplasty, and chin augmentation. Most patients who have had facelift surgery can expect to return to Dr. Eisemann’s office the day after surgery for a post-op check, and then their sutures will be removed approximately 1 week later.  Patients are “up and around” the day after surgery with some restrictions.  Any pain and discomfort can be well managed with oral pain medication.  Most swelling subsides about one week after the surgery.  By the time the patients return to their normal daily activities, two to three weeks after their facelift surgery, any remaining bruising can be easily disguised with make-up.
