Large or disproportionate ears can be a source of embarrassment and distract attention from other facial features. For children and adults, overly large ears can be the cause of harassment and bullying, things that can leave emotional scars that last a lifetime.

What is an otoplasty?

Otoplasty in Houston is a surgical procedure used to reshape the ear. It is one of the few facial plastic surgery procedures that are suitable for growing children. Indeed, this procedure is often performed on children as young as seven years old, helping reduce teasing by restoring a balanced and natural look.

However, children are not the only ones who can benefit from ear surgery (otoplasty). If you are unhappy with the size or shape of your ears, Houston plastic surgeons Dr. Michael Eisemann and Dr. Bradley Eisemann will be happy to meet with you for an otoplasty consultation. A private consultation will help you determine if this procedure will produce the changes you envision.

What can ear surgery do for me?

If you have been unhappy with the appearance of your ears for many years, imagine being free from that concern. Our Houston otoplasty procedure can transform your life, and dramatically increase your level of self-confidence. Ear surgery treats any of the following ear issues:

  • Overly large ears
  • Ears that project too far from the head
  • One ear larger than the other
  • Shell-shaped ear or ears
  • Overly-large earlobes

What is ear surgery like?

While every ear surgery is tailored to meet the specific needs of the patient, the general principles are the same. Dr. Michael Eisemann and Dr. Bradley Eisemann utilize small incisions in the natural folds on the back side of the ear to manipulate the cartilage framework of the ear. Internal sutures are placed to help change the shape of the cartilage, and sometimes cartilage is actually removed. A fine balance of manipulation of the underlying cartilage and re-draping the overlying skin must be completed.

What is the recovery time after ear surgery?

Otoplasty is a surgical procedure, but recovery is typically fast – particularly when you carefully follow all of Dr. Michael Eisemann and Dr. Bradley Eisemann’s pre- and postoperative instructions. Parents of children who have undergone otoplasty in Houston need to be vigilant to help ensure proper healing during the first few weeks following surgery.

For the first few days, protective dressings will be placed over the ear. This allows for optimal healing and protection from excess pressure. Swelling is usually resolved by two weeks, but careful protection of the ears must be completed for about six weeks.
