What Is Breast Reconstruction?

Breast reconstruction is a specialized surgical procedure that rebuilds the breast after breast cancer treatment, helping patients recognize themselves in the mirror again. We’ll build your reconstruction plan around your medical and surgical history, working with your mastectomy or lumpectomy results to reshape the breasts. At Eisemann, we believe that reconstruction is an integral part of breast cancer treatment, and we’ll perform your surgery with the respect, sensitivity, and kindness you deserve.

A Confidential Consultation

Your journey at Eisemann Plastic Surgery Center will begin with a one-on-one consultation with Dr. Eisemann. There, you’ll discuss your aesthetic goals, concerns, and medical history, and he’ll examine your remaining breast tissue and mastectomy or lumpectomy results to determine if breast reconstruction is right for you. If you decide to pursue an implant-based reconstruction, you’ll work together to choose your optimal implant shape, type, texture, and size to achieve your desired result.

Pricing Your Procedure

The cost of your breast reconstruction in Houston will depend on the following factors:

  • Whether one or both breasts will be treated
  • Implant type, if applicable
  • Surgical complexity
  • Whether additional procedures will be performed in the same session

Most insurance companies will cover breast reconstructions. After your initial consultation, we’ll work with you to understand your coverage, out-of-pocket costs, and financing options to ensure your care is affordable and accessible.

What to Expect From Your Breast Reconstruction in Houston

Your breast reconstruction will be performed at our QUAD A-accredited surgical center in Houston, and you’ll rest in a private recovery room with a trusted friend, family member, or partner after your procedure. We use our signature IV sedation with nerve block to prevent pain and discomfort during surgery and promote a faster, smoother recovery process.

During surgery, Dr. Eisemann will make strategic incisions in the breasts to create space for additional tissue or an implant to restore volume to the breast. Once the tissue or implant has been placed, the remaining skin will be carefully redraped to create a firm, natural-looking breast. Depending on your needs, we may also adjust the nipple to a more appropriate position before closing all incisions with small sutures.

Gentle, Patient-First Recovery

Every patient is different, but recovery after a breast reconstruction in Houston typically involves swelling, soreness, bruising, and tightness in the chest for up to two weeks. If you choose a tissue-based reconstruction, you’ll notice additional swelling and bruising at your donor site. We’ll provide you with specialized surgical garments to help reduce initial swelling and encourage your tissues to settle properly.

Most of our Houston patients resume normal activities, such as desk work, light movement, and social gatherings, within two weeks. You’ll need to avoid strenuous exercise for at least eight weeks to allow your body to heal.

Your Personalized Post-Op Process

After your procedure, our team will share a customized recovery plan tailored to your individual medical needs. This plan may include the following items:

  • Incision site care and cleaning protocols
  • Supportive garment guidance
  • Side effects to monitor
  • Recovery clothing options
  • Surgical drain care guidelines, if applicable
  • Sleep position restrictions
  • Activity limitations
  • Hygiene recommendations
  • Swelling and pain management strategies

You’ll be closely monitored throughout your recovery, and you’ll return to our Houston office several times over the coming months for follow-up visits with Dr. Eisemann. There, he’ll check your healing progress, remove any remaining sutures or drains, and approve you to resume high-impact activities, such as running, intense exercise, and pilates.

Types of Breast Reconstructions

At Eisemann Plastic Surgery Center, we’re proud to offer multiple breast reconstruction options to patients, ensuring we can bring their vision for themselves to life. We provide the following breast reconstructions:

Flap Breast Reconstruction

Also known as autologous reconstruction, this method uses tissue from the patient's abdomen or back to replace missing tissue and reconstruct the breast. It’s best suited to patients who have completed radiotherapy treatments.

Implant-Based Reconstruction

This procedure uses a saline or silicone breast implant to restore the breast to its pre-cancer shape, size, and volume. Often, this is done in tandem with cancer treatment, with tissue expanders inserted into the breasts to make room for an implant.

Nipple and Areola Reconstruction

If a nipple-sparing mastectomy was not part of your treatment, this procedure will rebuild the nipple and areola to preserve as much function and sensation as possible.

Completing Your Transformation

Many women take breast reconstruction as an opportunity to reclaim their sense of self and start a powerful body rejuvenation journey.

Complementary procedures include the following:

  • Tummy tuck (abdominoplasty)
  • Facelift
  • Rhinoplasty
  • Thigh lift
  • Body lift

Dr. Eisemann will advise you on which procedures are safe to combine based on your current health status and which would benefit more from a staged approach.

Breast Reconstruction Frequently Asked Questions

How many surgeries are involved in breast reconstruction?

Every woman’s surgical plan is different, and some patients may require additional procedures to complete their reconstruction. Typically, autologous reconstruction is performed in two procedures: one to place the tissue expander and one to insert the implant and adjust the nipple. Flap reconstruction is typically performed in a single procedure, but it may require additional procedures, such as fat grafting, to refine your results.

Will my reconstructed breasts look and feel natural?

Yes. At Eisemann, our surgical plans are designed to achieve natural-looking, beautiful results that feel authentic to your body. Your reconstructed breasts may be slightly firmer than your pre-cancer breasts, but they will look natural.

How will breast reconstruction impact my nipple sensation?

Most patients experience some reduction in sensation around the entire breast, including the nipple, after reconstruction. This is normal and to be expected. Total loss of sensation is uncommon but possible.

Will reconstruction interfere with cancer monitoring?

No. Breast reconstruction does not impact ongoing cancer surveillance, and your care team will continue to monitor your health with no interruptions. We’ll coordinate with your care providers to preserve and support your long-term health.
