To Be a Good Candidate for Transgender Surgery, You Will Need to:

Meet WPATH prequalification
Be in generally good physical health
Be a nonsmoker
Be prepared for a surgical procedure and recovery time
Be willing to follow pre- and postoperative instructions

If you are not interested in an irreversible male-to-female or female-to-male transformation, Dr. Eisemann can discuss reversible transgender treatments such as pubertal blockers, along with partial reversible treatments, such as hormone therapy. Both surgical and nonsurgical transgender patients must obtain at least one letter from a licensed medical health professional prior to treatment.

WPATH Standards of Care in Houston

WPATH standards of care require that a medical professional, such as a psychologist or therapist, sexologist, or physician who prescribes gender transition-related hormones, provide a referral prior to any surgical procedure. This professional must have been in regular contact with you within the past 6 months to qualify as a referral. Dr. Eisemann will work directly with any medical professionals you are currently seeing to make sure you receive the most effective treatment possible.

Medical Referrals and WPATH Standards

If you are approaching your medical provider about this referral, please bear in mind that WPATH standards require a letter containing:

Your general identifying characteristics
The results of your psychosocial assessment, including any diagnoses
The duration of your relationship with a mental health professional, including the type of evaluation and therapy or counseling to date
An explanation that the criteria for surgery have been met, and a brief description of the clinical rationale for supporting a request for surgery
A statement about the fact that informed consent has been obtained
A statement that the mental health professional is available for coordination of care and welcomes a phone call to establish this
