What Is a Septoplasty?

A septoplasty, sometimes called nasal septal reconstruction, is a type of functional rhinoplasty that straightens the septum to correct deviations. When the bony, cartilaginous septum becomes deviated, it can create the following issues:

  • Chronic mouth breathing
  • Snoring
  • Obstructive sleep apnea
  • Excessive drooling during sleep
  • Reduced exercise tolerance

A septoplasty in Houston can be performed on its own or as part of a rhinoplasty to improve breathing function while addressing cosmetic dissatisfaction with the nose.

Pricing Your Procedure

The cost of your septoplasty in Houston will depend on the following factors:

  • Surgical complexity
  • Whether the septoplasty is part of a rhinoplasty
  • Extent of correction
  • Whether additional procedures will be performed in the same session

Because septoplasties are typically performed for medical reasons, most procedures qualify for some level of insurance coverage. After your consultation, a member of our team will walk you through a detailed cost breakdown, including your insurance coverage and financing options, for full transparency.

What to Expect From Your Septoplasty

Here, septoplasty is performed on an outpatient basis at our state-of-the-art QUAD A-accredited surgical center in Houston. We’ll administer local anesthesia with additional sedation to prevent pain during surgery, but you can request general anesthesia to suit your preferences. After surgery, you’ll rest in a private recovery suite with a trusted friend, family member, or partner until you’re ready to head home.

During surgery, Dr. Eisemann will make strategic incisions at the base of the nostrils to lift the mucous membrane and access the internal nasal structures. Depending on your needs, he may correct the septum by straightening the nasal wall, removing excess tissue, or removing the septum to straighten it externally before replacing it back into the nose. All incisions will be closed with small sutures to encourage smooth, consistent healing.

Recovery Tailored to You

Recovery after a septoplasty in Houston typically involves swelling, soreness, and bruising for about one week after your procedure. Some minor bleeding is an expected and normal part of recovery. We’ll place a silicone splint on your nose to protect it from irritation and impact as you begin to heal.

Most patients return to light movement within a few days, but you may wait to resume desk work and social gatherings until after all bruising has faded for your own comfort. You’ll need to rest with your head elevated for a few days to help reduce initial swelling. Strenuous exercise must be avoided for up to one month to prevent excess bleeding during recovery.

Your Personalized Post-Op Process

After your procedure, our team will share a customized recovery plan tailored to your needs. This plan may include the following items:

  • Incision site care and cleaning protocols
  • Recovery clothing options
  • Splint-wearing guidance
  • Side effects to monitor
  • Sleep position restrictions
  • Activity limitations
  • Hygiene recommendations
  • Swelling and pain management strategies

Over the coming weeks, you’ll return to our Houston office for regular follow-up appointments with Dr. Eisemann. There, he’ll remove any remaining sutures, assess your breathing function, and approve you for intense activities like running, cycling, and swimming.

Septoplasty Techniques

Typically, septoplasties are performed using an open technique, but Dr. Eisemann combines this approach with an advanced Piezo technique. His combined method uses the following:

Open Rhinoplasty

Here, incisions are made at the base of the nostril to provide maximum access and visibility to the septum.

Piezo Rhinoplasty

This advanced approach uses ultrasonic energy to make structural adjustments to the septum without affecting the surrounding tissues, resulting in less post-op bruising and swelling.

Completing Your Transformation

Since septoplasties are often performed for medical reasons, many of our Houston patients take this as an opportunity to pursue a cosmetic facial rejuvenation as well.

Complementary procedures include the following:

  • Rhinoplasty
  • Lip lift
  • Chin augmentation
  • Facelift
  • Brow lift

Septoplasty Frequently Asked Questions

Will a septoplasty change the appearance of my nose?

No. Septoplasties do not affect the outward appearance of your nose, outside of some minimal scarring along the base of the nostrils. If your septoplasty is combined with a rhinoplasty, then you’ll see major aesthetic changes to the nose post-op.

How soon will my breathing improve after a septoplasty?

Your nose may feel congested or stuffy immediately after your septoplasty due to internal swelling, but you should begin to feel breathing improvements within a few days. As swelling continues to subside, your breathing function will gradually improve, and you’ll reach optimal airflow once all residual swelling has faded.

Can a deviated septum return after a septoplasty?

No. Septoplasty is a permanent procedure, and your deviated septum will not return after surgery. However, trauma or injury to the nose could impact your results, so we recommend taking extra caution when playing contact sports to prevent altering your outcome.
