How Does Botox Work?
Wrinkles are the result of muscle contractions. Or, to be more precise, they’re the results of billions of muscle contractions that occur over the course of your entire life. Any individual contraction is meaningless, but as we age these contractions accumulate and result in wrinkles.
Those contractions are caused by signals sent from your brain and conveyed by nerves to the muscles. Your face is criss-crossed with nerves and muscles, and it’s vulnerable to the signs of age and wear.
This is where BOTOX® Cosmetic comes in. It’s a weakened, medically engineered version of the botulinum toxin, and it works by blocking your nerves from receiving contraction signals from the brain. This prevents your nerves from telling your muscles to contract. Before long, your muscles will relax, smoothing out your skin and eliminating wrinkles and creases.
The end result is a smoother, tighter, more youthful looking face without the appearance of fatigue and age.
BOTOX®‘s results are temporary, and after a few months your facial muscles will once begin to contract, producing more wrinkles. You can return to our office for another treatment, though at a certain point the injections will begin losing effectiveness.
